We recommend setting up a CNAME record for subdomains only, like ‘subdomain.example.com’ or just ‘🤍example.com’. Setting up a CNAME for your bare domain (example.com) may result in email service misconfiguration. In this video, I go over the different DNS record types and how to use them with practical examples. I go over the most common DNS record types including A, PTR, CNAME, NS, MX, SOA, and TXT records. - A Record, A means address record. The forward zone file uses A record. A record associates a subdomain with a certain IP address. - PTR record, found in the Reverse zone file. It's known as a reverse lookup, and it's most commonly used to verify the hostname of a mail server. If we search for a subdomain that is related to an IP, it will seek for the PTR record in the reverse zone and identify the IP associated with the subdomain. - CNAME Record, CNAME stands for canonical name, and it is used to define each host record to point to the original A record if we wish to use the same server for different subdomains. This is referred to as aliasing. - NS Record, NS records defines the Name Server or DNS server of the domain, if we want to know any domains DNS server, then we have to query the NS record. - MX record, MX trans for mail exchanger, the domains mail server is specified by the MX record. MX record defined with its priority, if domains have multiple mail servers then we can set them with priority. - SOA record, SOA trans for the start of authority. Add DNS records and get your domain verified in CloudFlare. Applicable for Freshsales Suite and Freshmarketer. Follow these steps: 1. Login to your Cloudflare dashboard and click the DNS icon. 2. Click the Add Record button and choose the type as CNAME. 3. Now, under Domain Verification, copy the host field of the first record and paste it into the Name field in Cloudflare. 4. Copy the Value text of the same record and paste it into the target field. Disable Proxy Status. 5. Click Save to add the new record. 6. Repeat the same steps for all the remaining records on the domain configuration page.

Mail Exchange (MX): Holds the address of mail servers for that domain. Service Record (SRV): Holds the address of services on the network. E.g. Active Directory DC's. Start of Authority (SOA): Contains information and configuration for a zone file. Name Server (NS): Contain the address of other DNS servers for that zone. Pointer (PTR): Reverse look up record allowing a hostname for an IP Address to be look up. Host (A and AAAA) The host record is used to store the address of a hostname. "A" is used for IPv4 and AAAA (Quad A) for IPv6. These can be created manually in DNS or if dynamic DNS is enabled and the client can register its hostname and thus its IP Address with the DNS server. Alias (CName) A canonical name or CName record provides an alias service in DNS. A CName effectively points to another A or Quad A record. When the client requests the hostname that is contained in the CName, they are given the IP Address that is contained in the A record or Quad A record. The advantage of a CName is that it can provide a simple name to the user rather than a more complex server name. For example, instead of having to remember FS27 for the local file server, a CName of FS could be used to point towards the server FS27. CName's can also be used to transparently redirect network traffic. For example, if you changed you mind and wanted to redirect the user to FS28 you would only need to change the CName record to point to FS28 rather than FS27. It should be remembered that the old record may exist in the client cache and may take some time to expire. Mail Exchange (MX) The mail exchange record contains a mail server that is able to process mail for that domain name. When a mail server wants to deliver mail, it will perform a DNS lookup asking the DNS server for an MX record for that DNS Domain name. The mail server will then attempt to deliver mail to that server. The mail server does not need to have the same DNS name as the mail that is being delivered, it simply needs to understand how to process mail for that DNS domain name. The MX record also has priority value that can be configured. If two or more MX Exchange records exist for the same DNS Doman name, the MX record with the lowest priority will be tried first. If this fails, the MX record with the next lowest value will be tried until the mail is delivered. Often large companies will have multiple mail severs for incoming mail. In some cases, these additional mail servers may be located on different sides of the globe in case there is a long network outage. Service Record (SRV) Service records allow clients on the network to find resources on the network. Active Directory creates a number of service records in DNS to allow clients to find resources like Domain Controllers. This is why Active Directory cannot operate without DNS. A single service record has a number of data fields associated with it. These include, service, target, port and priority. Service records are normally created automatically by applications assuming that your DNS server allows dynamic updates. Start of Authority (SOA) There is one start of authority record (SOA) for each zone. Even though the SOA is technically a DNS record, essentially modification of the SOA record is performed through the properties of the DNS zone. Looking at the data in the SOA record, you can configure options for the zone like the primary name server for that zone (DNS servers that hold the master records for the zone), the e-mail address of an administrator, serial number (Incremented each time a change is made in the DNS zone) and the refresh time for the zone (How often a secondary zone should query a master for changes). After you list a domain for sale at Sedo, you will need to verify you are the owner of the domain before it will show as for sale. In this video I will show you how to verify using the TXT and CNAME methods. First things first choose one method, either TXT or the Cname, we recommend the TXT method. For both methods you will first need to locate your personal Ownership Verification ID in your Sedo account, go to Sedo.com and select "Domain Management" and then select the tab "Owner Self-Verification". This ID is unique to your account and is always the same for any domains you add.. You will need to copy this ID later in the process and paste it to your registrars account so our system can recognise that the domain belongs to you. Minimise this page for now and then go login to your registrars account. The registrars is where you pay your renewal fees for the domain. I am using the registrar name.com, your registrars account may look different to this, however don’t be put off by this, you should simply look for similarly named actions or menu options. To verify using the TXT Method, look for an action or option which says something like edit/add DNS settings. I can see this option appear if I select the domains I want to verify from the overview. Change the type of record to TXT, then go back to your Sedo account and copy the verification ID we minimised earlier and paste it into the response field. Should your registrar also require you to submit a Hostname, then simply enter the “🤍” sign. Also, if your registrar needs you to enter a TTL value, please enter “3600”. Select add DNS record and that’s all. Just allow for the technical change to take place which may not always be instant, it can take a few hours. CNAME is an alternative method for verifying, and similar to the TXT method I previously described. For CNAME verification, Copy the Ownership Verification ID from your Sedo account that we located earlier. Then, login at your registrars account, and look for an action or menu to edit/ or add DNS settings. At Name.com this option appears once I select a domain in the main overview. Choose CNAME for the Type of record field. For host name: simply copy and paste your Verification ID from your Sedo account. In the response field: please input verify.sedo.com. and if you are asked to enter a TTL value then please enter “3600” Select add DNS record and that’s it. Any changes you make to your DNS settings should happen within a few hours but in the worst case scenario can take several days if there are delays with the technical update. Adding DNS records and verifying domains in GoDaddy. Applicable for Freshsales Suite and Freshmarketer. 1. Login to your GoDaddy account. 2. Under DNS Management, click the Add button and select the type CNAME. 3. Now, under Domain Verification, copy the Host text of the first record and paste it in the Host field in GoDaddy. 4. Copy the Value text of the same record and paste it in the ‘Points to’ field in GoDaddy. 5. Click Save to add the new record. 6. Repeat the same steps for all the remaining records in the domain configuration page.
